Since childhood, I’ve been obsessed with the outdoors and anything that challenges the human spirit. I grew up on a ranch in the southwest—often camping, hunting and fishing in the countryside, the high desert and the mountains with my family. My sense of wonder seemed never-ending. If it was outside, it had my full attention.

I chased adventure where I could find it. When I was 15, I remember volunteering at our local Department of Wildlife (fish and game), by 19 I booked my first international fishing trip to South America, and by the time I was 20, I had fished Pyara along the rivers of Colombia, slept under the stars, bathed in rivers, and camped with the indigenous tribes I met along the way. The trip was brutal, exhausting, exhilarating. I was captivated. So much so that later that year I went to Argentina and fished Golden Dorado and Peacock Bass with the same crew.

All I knew was that I wanted more. So, that’s what I did. By the time I hit 30, my adventure resume was eclectic to say the least: surveying sheep territory, banding and documenting birds, hosting youth events in the wild, and even assisting with fundraisers to support outdoor excursions. Eventually I traveled to Alaska. They say that a place can change you. Alaska was proof of that.  I can’t find the words to describe that kind of wonder. Its raw, wild beauty and what it does to the human spirit. I can only say Alaska is part of me now and will be for the rest of my life. I've since returned every yeartwice venturing north of the Arctic Circle. Next year will be my eighth trip.

The seed that was planted in my youth has grown into a life of discovery and inspiration and courage as I faced sometimes unimaginable physical, spiritual, and mental challenges. My adventures outdoors have rebuilt the world within me, and traveling with communities dedicated to conservation taught me that one cannot happen without the other.

Whether I’m halfway around the world on another endurance race or close to home pack-rafting down a river—I’ll be right here, with the rest of you adventure-junkies—plotting,  sharing tips, and exchanging stories. And I hope, in some small way, I can inspire someone else's next outdoor adventure—especially if it’s their very first one.
